Exclusive Interview with GM Randy Whitaker

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

About two weeks ago I had an opportunity to conduct an e-mail interview with General Manager of the Harrisburg Senators, Randy Whitaker. He was kind enough to answer both business and personal questions. Enjoy…

SFU: Could you please tell Senators fans about your background before being hired as the Senators GM? How you think it will help in your new position?

RW: Until coming to the Senators, I spent my entire career in local television. Two weeks after graduating from the University of Tennessee I started at a station in Winston-Salem, NC. Then a 6 year stop in Memphis, and then on to abc27 for over 19 years here in Harrisburg. I was always in some aspect of marketing sales, i.e., selling commercial time to businesses. My last 5 years at abc27 I was Research Director (marketing research to support the station sales, news and programming efforts), Marketing Director (marketing and promoting the station from the sales point of view), and Special Projects Coordinator (logistics leader for station sales projects like Midstate Home Makeover and Family Fun Fair). I had the longest business card at the station.

I actually had to be in the position here to realize how well my experienced matched the needs here. It is all about marketing. We want to market the team to bring as many fans to the stadium as possible. Once we do that, we want to market those fans to our business partners so that they get the return on their sponsorship investment that will make them want to grow that partnership and investment year after year.

So basically I’ve gone from marketing one form of entertainment to another. Being the huge minor league baseball fan that I am, it is easy for me to get behind my produce with a successful passion.

SFU: Some fans may not know what a minor league GM’s job consist of. Could you please describe what some of your duties include?

RW: The GM of a minor league baseball team is the leader of the business efforts of the team. The Nationals will handle all the player matters and baseball stuff. We’re responsible for making the operation of the business around the game function successfully so that the fans will enjoy the best experience possible, and the business partners will get the best return on their investment.

On top of that, we have the matter of stadium upkeep, accommodations management for the visiting teams, the umps, etc. Basically everything you can think of – and many things you wouldn’t even notice to think of – that makes the season run.

SFU: What are some of the things you will miss most going from fan to GM?

RW: It will be a trade off. I’ll get to experience the excitement of being a part of the game itself. But I’ll also miss some of the personal aspects that I won’t have time for anymore, or will just not be allowed to partake in because it is “against the code.” The biggest change for me will be autographs. I can’t get them. I’ve spent hours after games getting autographs. I’ve got 12 years of complete sets of Eastern League team balls that I’ve gotten outside the visitor’s locker after games. My collection numbers over 1700 balls, many of which I’ve gotten here at the park. Now that is not something that is allowed. That will be a big change.

SFU: You started a blog, A Fan is the GM, shortly after being hired. What made you want to start a blog? What are your expectations for it?

RW: I want to let our fans know that I’m still one of them and I am approaching things from their point of view. I think this is a really cool experience and if it had happened to someone else, I would have loved to hear what they were going through too. Unfortunately, that is not exactly the direction that the blog has taken. It has been more of a promotional discussion. But is has been my personal promotional discussion and not some polished marketing message. The reason it hasn’t been more “bloggish” is that most of the stuff I have been through is … well, I think it would be pretty boring or uninteresting to the general fan. Sure, it’s interesting, but how much do people want to know about calling on potential business partners, or negotiating with hotels? So I try to make it worth reading too.

SFU: In your blog, several times you mentioned the importance of superior customer service. Could you please tell the fans your definition of superior customer service? Also, could your provide examples of how it will be different this season compared to previous years?

RW: It’s all about the details. I’ve always had a passion for customer service. My boys hate it when I go on a rant about the decline of good customer service out in the business world. I think any paying customer deserves what they pay for, that is a vital part of the contract we have with our fans. If they are going to come and be good fans (and I recognize that some aren’t – but the vast majority are), then they deserve the best service we can deliver for their dollar. So I pledge to pay more attention to details this year. I hope you’ll see a difference in things like cleanliness and staff performance. It’s been fine – we’ll just do it better this year.

SFU: What changes can fans expect to see as far as promotions and in-game entertainment during the 2008 season?

RW: I won’t go into details because I don’t want to ruin the surprises, but I will say that you’ll see a freshening and increased variety that I don’t think has been present for a while. To the casual, once-or-twice-a-year-fan, it won’t be as evident since every game is new. But to the regular fan, you should see it pretty early.

SFU: Lately, Senators fans have had a lot of questions regarding stadium renovations. Are you able to update them on the status of the renovations? When will the new design be available to the public? Is there a time frame as to when renovations might begin? Is there anything that might further delay the renovation process?

RW: The plans are going forward for a complete rebuild over the off season. We hopefully will start taking down parts of the existing structure (some parts that won’t interrupt fan experience this year) during the season this year. After the season it all come down – right down to the dirt. Only the playing surface will remain. Then by opening day 2009, we’ll be in our new home. The architects continue to meet and plan and refine the design. Hopefully early this season we’ll be able to put some renderings out for public display. The only thing that could sink us is the state side of the funding not coming through – though we have pretty good assurances that it will come through in time to get it done on time. It’s Harrisburg’s turn!!!!

SFU: When the 2008 season is over, the fans go home, the players move on and the stadium is cleaned out; when you have time to reflect on the season what do you hope to have accomplished?

RW: This year is all about maximizing the fan experience in the last year of the current facility and setting up things for the move to the new one next year. If we make things better this year, and make the transition easier for next year, it will be a success.

SFU: You mentioned that you lived locally for a long time. What activities do you or your family like to do in the Harrisburg area?

RW: You mean besides baseball? After all, my life for the last 15 years has been spent chasing the next minor league game here or elsewhere. But the other things: We are very involved in our church and especially the youth group there. Lots of opportunity for activities there. We like working on our house and yard. There never seems to be enough time.

SFU: You noted that you frequently traveled to various places to see baseball games. What were some of your favorite places you visited and why? Do you think this will help in your role as GM and how?

RW: I hope my travels will translate to some of the freshening mentioned earlier. I’ve seen games in nearly 100 different stadiums, 80 of which were minor leagues. I’ve seen lots of things I’d like to try, and some things I definitely want to avoid. Some of the best operations I’ve seen are right around here. Altoona and Reading both run outstanding organizations. As far as ballparks, I tend to like the historic old parks like Williamsport, Vermont and Bluefield WV. They may not be the most comfortable facilities, but the nostalgia is wonderful in a venue like that. You feel like you are going back in time to the days of Ruth and Gehrig.

SFU: If you collect baseball memorabilia, autographs and cards. What were some of your favorite things you collected during your travels?

RW: I have a pretty substantial collection. In addition the baseballs, I’ve got cards, player worn jerseys, stadium seats from old parks, etc. It is my passion. Luckily I don’t have to work weekends when the team is on the road, so I’ll still have the chance to get out to other parks to see what they are doing and continue to build my collection.

One of my favorite pieces in my collection? I have the PA announcer’s microphone from Watt Powell park in Charleston WV.

SFU: Before we end the interview is there anything you want to say to Senators fans?

RW: I just look forward to trying to translate all my experiences and enthusiasm into a superior experience for all my fellow Senators fans. I hope they continue to keep me posted on how we are doing – in a constructive manner – as we work on this season and the exciting future.

I want to thank Randy for taking time out to answer our questions. Good luck this season.

Please post any comments and questions.

Harrisburg Giants

Every year the Harrisburg Senators hold a game honoring those individuals who played in the Negro Leagues. This is truly one of my favorite events all season. I love the atmosphere this event brings, the old style uniforms and the pre-game ceremony. The best part of all is having the opportunity to meet and talk with several members of the Harrisburg Giants. Listening to their stories is priceless. If I was able to attend only one game each year, this would be it.

I was really hoping to write a more in-depth article covering the entire history of the Harrisburg Giants but the lack of information available has prevented me from writing it at this time. I will do some digging around so I am better prepared to write something closer to the game honoring the Negro League players this season.

For now I’m posting images from the past two seasons Negro League event. I’ve also compiled links to various interviews/articles of players from the Harrisburg Giants.

Spring Training Report: Collin Balester

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I was reading a article today on the Washinton Post Web site Balester, Detwiler Show How To Make Good Impressions.

Here is the complete article:

Out on Field 3 at the Washington Nationals' practice facility Monday, Manager Manny Acta and some of the team's top hitters got a firsthand look at the organization's top two pitching prospects, right-hander Collin Balester and lefty Ross Detwiler, and it practically defied words. "Ooooooooh-wooooooo," said veteran Dmitri Young, after squaring off against Balester, who at one point froze him on successive pitches, a fastball and a curve, sending Young away muttering to
himself.

"He had extra jump on his ball," Young said of Balester, whom he got to know last spring while in the Nationals' minor league camp. "He always had potential. But now, if someone goes down in spring training, we could see him [on the big league roster] when we head north." Detwiler followed Balester with another impressive session -- at one point, Acta backed away from the cage, shaking his head -- although his command was not as precise as Balester's. "It was all right," Detwiler said. "I want to be a little bit better [about] keeping the ball down in the zone."

The Nationals have not ruled out keeping Balester and/or Detwiler, both of whom are 21, on their big league roster -- in Detwiler's case, perhaps even in a bullpen understudy role -- but are more inclined to send them to the minors at the start of the season.

"We're just going to sit down at the end [of camp] and see if we can carry him in our bullpen -- if he's lights-out, and the other guys aren't as good as him -- or just send him down to get his innings," Acta said of Detwiler. "There's no hurry with him whatsoever."

Spring Training Report on Whitesell

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

There was a little write up today on the Washington Nationals site about Josh Whitesell. With Dmitri Young and Nick Johnson a head of Whitesell on the depth chart, it seems as though Josh will be starting the season in Columbus. Here is what the article had to say:

On the move: The odds of first baseman Josh Whitesell being put on the 25-man roster are slim, but he already is showing the Nationals that he is making progress in the Minor Leagues. Last year was arguably Whitesell's best season. He hit .284 with a career high 24 home runs and a .425 on-base percentage for Harrisburg.

Going into that season, Whitesell, 25, had a reputation of being a mediocre first baseman, but he cut down on his errors and was named the Eastern League's best defensive first baseman in a survey conducted by Baseball America.

A sixth-round pick in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, Whitesell said maturity is the reason everything clicked for him last season.

"I put in all the hard work on offense and defense. It really started to pay off," Whitesell said. "I feel more comfortable out there. I feel [like] more of a professional. I was able to take a professional at-bat every time."

The Nationals rewarded Whitesell by putting him on the 40-man roster last fall. "I was pleased. It was a promotion for a new job. It is something I have been working toward since being drafted," he said. "I want to continue to work hard and try to make the big league club.

My 2008 Roster....

The 2008 season is just around the corner (April 3rd) and most fans are starting to wonder who will be assigned to Harrisburg this season. As I’m sure you know, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered before the Nationals start assigning players to minor league teams. Spring training performance and injuries will also play a major role in where players are assigned. Here is a list of players that I think MIGHT start the 2008 season in Harrisburg.

Catcher
Jesus Flores – R/R (AA or AAA?)
Luke Montz or Devin Ivany

Infield
1B – Chris Marrero
2B – Leonard Davis
3B – Brandon Powell or Matt Rogelstad (Castro could start)
SS – Ian Desmond
Utility – Ofilio Castro (2B/3B)

Outfield
CF – Justin Maxwell – R/R
OF – Marvin Lowrance – L/L
OF – Edgardo Baez – R/R
OF - Mike Daniel

Pitching Staff
Adam Carr - RHP
Carlos Martinez – RHP
Cory Van Allen – LHP
Clint Everts – RHP
Ross Detwiler – LHP
Jack Spardlin – LHP
Eddy Baeza – RHP
Macro Estrada – RHP
David Trahan – RHP
Shairon Martis - RHP

Over the past few weeks (and even today) I’ve read conflicting reports on where Jesus Flores and Ross Detwiler might start the season. As of right now Flores is stuck in his home country with visa issues (should report to spring training this weekend). He has a chance to begin the season as the Nats starting catcher or he could be assigned to Harrisburg (as reported a few weeks ago). It all depends on how quickly La Duca and Estrada recover from surgery. Reports out today are that Detwiler could start the season in the Nats bullpen. My opinion is he should start the season in Harrisburg.

Putting a list like this together, this early, is difficult. I know I am a few players short too but I was having a difficult time filling out the final few roster spots. I’m sure some of the players on my list will be assigned to Harrisburg and others won’t. We will find out soon, 43 days and counting until opening day. Remember to come out to FanFest on March 1st from 11 to 4, at the Harrisburg Mall.

Be sure to visit Senators Fans Unite on Friday, February 29th for an Exclusive interview with a member of the Senators Front office staff.

Klubhouse Kids

Two lucky kids will be the face of the team for the entire 2008 season. Below is the official Press Release regarding the "try outs".

SENATORS SEARCHING FOR “KLUBHOUSE KIDS”
Two lucky youngsters will be faces of the team for 2008

Are YOU the biggest Harrisburg Senators fan around? Prove it! Kids aged 12 and under can enter the Senators’ Klubhouse Kids contest for a chance to receive the VIP treatment for the entire 2008 season! “Tryouts” are scheduled for March 1st at center Court of the Harrisburg Mall, 11:30am-2pm as part of the Harrisburg enators FanFest.

Two kids will be selected: one boy and one girl. Each prospect will have about 60 seconds on stage during the FanFest to show judges why he or she deserves to be a Klubhouse Kid. Youngsters can show off their cheering prowess, sing a song, perform magic tricks… whatever it takes to convince the judges that they are the most enthusiastic fanatics in town. Prospects do NOT need to be baseball players to win; just huge fans of the Senators!

Entrants must pre-register by calling Emily Winslow at 717-231-4444 or e-mailing ewinslow@senatorsbaseball.com. Only 100 tryout spots are available. Prospects must attend the FanFest to be considered.

The winners will be the face of the team for the 2008 season; they will receive a free pass to every home game, a cameo in at least one Senators’ TV commercial, an appearance in the Senators’ gameday program and other print media and baseball cards featured in the Senators’ 2008 team set. Just like a top draft pick, the Klubhouse Kids will be introduced to the media at a press conference and presented with a Senators’ jersey and hat. They will throw out ceremonial first pitches on Opening Night, April 3rd at Commerce Bank Park.

The Senators’ FanFest is set for 11am-4pm, March 1st at the Harrisburg Mall’s Center Court. This is the third year in a row the Harrisburg Mall has hosted the event. The FanFest will feature various games for kids of all ages, the Senators’ famous winning spinning wheel, and for the third year in a row, the Senators will have National Anthem tryouts. The 2008 edition of the FanJam will make an appearance and Rascal and Grrrounder will sign autographs!

The 2008 season begins on Thursday, April 3rd at Commerce Bank Park when the Senators host the Cleveland Indians’ Eastern League affiliate Akron Aeros. What’s Going On???

The last few weeks have been slow. Not much to report on. This is probably the quiet before the storm. The biggest news lately is FanFest 2008, which is a little over 2 ½ weeks away. There seems to be plenty of surprises planned for FanFest. As the surprises are reveled I will post them. This event is sure to be fun for the whole family.

Over the weekend The Patriot-News reported that Chester has received state aid to build a professional soccer stadium. Meanwhile the Harrisburg Senators are still waiting for funding to rebuild Commerce Bank Park. The report also states, “The Senators' owners remain bullish about kicking off a $42 million renovation of their cozy stadium on the Susquehanna River sometime this year. But the plans rely on a commitment of state aid.” The stadium renovation topic won’t be going away anytime soon.

Spring training is just around the corner. For the Nationals, pitchers and catchers report this coming Sunday, February 17 and the full squad reports on February 22. I’m sure once spring training is in full swing this site will be updated daily.

What am I working on? Well, probably the biggest and most exclusive thing I have pending is an interview with another member of the Senators Front Office. This might take some time to finalize but hopefully everything works out and I’ll be able to post it in the coming weeks.

Over the last week I’ve been analyzing 2007 season rosters, statistics, recent scouting reports and off-season player moves to help compile a list of players who I think might start the season in Harrisburg. My list is almost finished and should be posted this week.

Flores Headed to Harrisburg

The Washington Post is reporting that the Nationals will most likely send Jesus Flores to Double-A Harrisburg to start the season. Flores came to the Nationals from the Mets via the 2006 Rule 5 Draft.

Flores played in 79 games for the Nats in 2007, hitting .244, 4 homeruns and 25 RBI’s. Sending him to Harrisburg will give him the opportunity to start everyday and continue to develop.

The main reason for sending Flores to Harrisburg is, "We think the pitching prospects are better there," GM Jim Bowden said. "He'll see better stuff there." Another factor that probably figured into the decision to send him to Harrisburg is Manager John Stearns. Stearns is a former All-Star catcher for the New York Mets. Learning from Stearns should help further develop Flores into an everyday catcher for the Nats in the near future.
