My Review of Sickels 2009 Top 20

Last week I posted a detailed analysis of Sickels 2008 list .

With the recent release of the 09 list I figured it would be a good idea to review the list and give my thoughts and analysis on the players. I also want to provide some back ground on the new comers, take a look at who is no longer on the list and give my 2 cents on the prospects.

Who’s Out
10 of the 20 players on the 08 list have graduated, were traded or removed from the list. Those that graduated to the MLB level from the 08 list are Collin Balester (ranked 6th with a B-) and John Lannan (ranked 9th with a B-).

Moved On
Moved on to another team for various reasons are Glenn Gibson (ranked 10th C+), Jake Smolinski (ranked 14th C+), Jon Albaladejo (ranked 15th with a C+), Jhonny Nunez (ranked 18th with a C+), Josh Whitesell (ranked 20th with a C).

Kicked Off
Players still in the Nats system that were removed for various reasons are Adam Carr (8th with a B-), Adrian Alaniz (16th with a C+) and Kory Casto (19th with a C+). Carr is probably due to his rocky performance in 08. Casto is probably because of age, service time at the MLB level and overall performance.

That means there are 10 newcomers to the list. 4 were acquired via the 2008 Draft. The remaining 6 are players in the organization who moved up based on performance

The 08 Draft Picks
OF Destin Hood ranks 9th with a C+ grade. He was a High School draft pick that signed a scholarship to play wide receiver at the University of Alabama but passed it up to sign with the Nationals and begin his professional baseball career. GM Jim Bowden once compared Hood's vision with that of Barry Bonds, his bat speed with that of Vladimir Guerrero. Hood hit .256 with 18 runs scored in 25 games with the GCL Nationals in 2008.

MiLB did the work for my on #12 Ranked, C+, Catcher Adrian Nieto. Visit the 2008 MiLB Draft Report on Nieto for more information. He hit .217 in 8 games for the GCL Nationals in 2008.

Coming in at #17 on Sickels list is pitcher Paul Demny, which was graded at C+. According to scouting reports Demny throws in the low to mid 90’s with plus fastball life and a nasty slider. He had some command issues in High School and in JR. College. He was 4-0, 2.50 ERA, 40 strike outs and 14 walks in 11 games with the GCL Nationals.

Last of the draft picks ranked on Sickels list is outfield prospect #18 JP Ramirez, graded at C+. I searched and couldn’t find much in the way of scouting reports. He signed with the Nationals right before the dead line so he saw limited action in the GCL. He hit .364 with 8 RBI’s in only 5 games for the GCL Nationals.

Organizational Movers
New to the list are: Ranked at #5 with a B- is pitcher Garrett Mock, not sure how or why he was off last years list. SS, Esmaily Gonzalez is ranked at #8 with a C+ grade. Roger Bernadina ranks at #11 with a C+ grade. C, Derek Norris comes in at #13 with a C+ grade. Marvin Lowrance also gets a C+ grade and ranks at #16. Tyler Clippard comes in at #19 with a C grade.

Missing
Like Sickels said any of the players from 8 down are interchangeable based on need. Players that are listed as "others" that I think could have been moved up at little are Mike Daniel, Leonard Davis, Mike Hinckley, Stephen King or Yunio Novoa.

I'm not sold on Clippard at 19, dispite the fact that he threw a no-hitter vs Harrisburg in 2007. I just don't think he can deliver at the MLB level. Any of the guys I named above could be put in Clippard's place.

Summary
The Nats have no grade A prospects which essentially means they are can’t miss prospects that will have an impact at the MLB level. 6 players have grade B’s (Zimmermann, Burgess, Marrero, Detwiler, Mock and McGeary). The other 14 are grade C’s prospects. The Nats are in the rebuilding process and are trying to stock the farm with talented young players who could possibly contribute at the MLB level at some point or become trade bait. Some of the younger players with C grades could see an increase in grading next year as more stats and prospect reports come in on them. The 4 players on this list I’m most interested in following are Burgess, McGeary, Hood and Demny. Burgess could see time in Harrisburg at some point next season but guess he will spend most if not all of next season at Potomac. While the other 3 might be few years or more away from the Double-A level.

Players graded in the top 20 that I think might appear in Harrisburg during the 09 season are: Burgess, Marrero, Detwiler, Maxwell, Lowrance, and Desmond. These guesses are really early and there are a lot of variables that come into play when assigning players.

It seems as thought the Nationals are headed in the right direction, at least they seem to have a game play when attempting to acquire players (via the Draft, Trades, or Free Agency). This is a big step in the right direction compared to a few years ago when the organization seemed hopeless. Some players have taken steps backwards and others have had injury issues; this will always be the case. I like the direction the Nationals are headed but like Sickels said it’s going to take a better effort on the international front.

Next up, Baseball America will announce their Top 10 Nationals Prospects on January 7, 2009.

AFL Wrap Up

The AFL has wrapped up with Phoenix beating Mesa 10-4 (Box/Game Story)in the Championship game. Phoenix has won 5 straight AFL Championships.

The Peoria Saguaros finished the season tied for the best record in the AFL with Mesa with a 26-12 record. Mesa played in the Championship game because the beat the Sag’s in head on competitions 4-3.

Next week (maybe this week if time permits) I will follow up with a review of how the Nationals players did. Much like my mid-season review I will be reviewing the Position players
separate from the Pitchers. I will be posting a summary of each player’s stats and assign a grade.

Nats Top 20 Prospects by John Sickels

Jordan Zimmermann

It’s that time of the year when prospect lists start getting released. John Sickels is one of the top ‘baseball prospectors’ around. He combines actual scouting reports and statistics to grade a prospect. I always look forward to his review of the Nationals prospects, as well as other prospects that might play on City Island some day. Sickels top choice this year is Senator's pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, pictured above.

Everything from here down is from Sickels website. I will follow up with a seperate post with my thoughts.

Washington Nationals Top 20 Prospects by John Sickels
A link to Sickels Grading System

All grades are EXTREMELY PRELIMINARY and subject to change. Don’t get too worried about exact rankings at this point, especially once you get out of the top 10. Grade C+/C guys are pretty interchangeable depending on what you are looking for.

1) Jordan Zimmerman, RHP, Grade B+: I liked this guy in college, and I think he is significantly underrated on a national basis.

2) Michael Burgess, OF, Grade B+: Power, youth, power, youth. Strikeouts are a concern. Maybe a Grade B?

3) Chris Marrero, 1B, Grade B: I will cut him some slack due to age/league and injury.

4) Ross Detwiler, LHP, Grade B-: Numbers at Potomac not great, but scouts still like power arm from left side.

5) Garrett Mock, RHP, Grade B-: Another guy underrated, love the K/IP rate in the majors, needs better control.

6) Jack McGeary, LHP, Grade B-: High ceiling, a long way from the majors, maybe a C+?

7) Justin Maxwell, OF, Grade C+: Love the tools, skills are developing, but can’t stay healthy and already 25.

8) Esmailyn Gonzalez, SS, Grade C+: Need to see at higher levels, but made progress this year.

9) Destin Hood, OF, Grade C+: Great tools, not much performance data at this point.

10) Shairon Martis, RHP, Grade C+: Quite young, held his own at advanced levels, but not beloved by scouts.

11) Rogerarvin Bernadina, OF, Grade C+: An ideal fourth outfielder, finally put his tools to use.

12) Adrian Nieto, C, Grade C+: Need more performance data, could be a steal in the fifth round.

13) Derek Norris, C, Grade C+: Power, walks, throwing arm, need some full season data, but very promising sleeper. Could rank as high as 8 depending on emphasis.

14) Colton Willems, RHP, Grade C+: Would like to see a higher strikeout rate, grade will drop if that doesn’t improve.

15) Josh Smoker, LHP, Grade C+: Would rank higher if healthy. This grade is generous.

16) Marvin Lowrance, OF, Grade C+: For some reason I like this guy. Nice power.

17) Paul Demny, RHP, Grade C+: Another guy who is a long way away, but has upside.

18) J.P. Ramirez, OF, Grade C+: Quick bat, but questions about power potential. Could rank much higher next year.

19) Tyler Clippard, RHP, Grade C: A forgotten man, but still an outside shot at being a useful pitcher.

20) Ian Desmond, SS, Grade C: Good tools, can field, probably won’t hit enough.

Others include: Adrian Alaniz, Will Atwood, Mike Daniel, Leonard Davis, Danny Espinosa, Marco Estrada, Graham Hicks, J.R. Higley, Mike Hinckley, Marcus Jones, Stephen King, Luke Montz, Yunior Novoa, and Brad Peacock.

SYSTEM IN BRIEF: The Nationals system is not as bad as you think it is, but it isn’t very good, either. They have a lot of depth in C+ style prospects, but lack impact talents beyond the top few, and even guys like Marrero and Detwiler have big question marks. Health has been a big issue for a lot of their players. They need to continue being aggressive in the draft, and further investments in Latin America would likely help.

Infected Weekend!!!!

What a difficult weekend!! My daughter got an ear infection and didn’t sleep well at all this past weekend. My wife and I took turns at night holding her on the couch; which didn’t amount to much sleep for my wife and me.

My computer got infected this weekend too. Not sure what happened there but I spent a great deal of time backing up what files I could and reloading my operating system. Now I am in the process of loading the rest of the software, which will probably take the rest of this week.

Needless to say it will probably be a slow week on here. The weekly posts most likely will not happen (Memorabilia Monday and New Photo Friday) as my scanner is not hooked up, neither is my camera software nor my photo editing software. I will try to double up next week to make up for missing this week. I will be posting various things this week but will probably take Thursday-thru-Sunday off so that I can enjoy the holiday with family, which I encourage everyone to do as well.

Make sure you keeping checking back through Wednesday for updates.

New Photo Friday: 11/21

This weeks New Photo Friday is something a little different. During the game I take pictures of various subjects and not just the action on the field. At times I snap pictures of the players in the dugout, a bat with a players name on it, gloves laying on the dugout steps, and so on.

This image was captured at the game on 8/23/08 vs. Altoona. The Senators were at bat and the players left their gloves and hats on the dugout steps. They were lined up pretty nice and the hat closest to me had the “H” facing me. There is two versions of the same image. One is full color and the other is a desaturated version. Which do you like better? I thought it looked decent so I snapped the image. Here are the results:

Color
IMG_4602-1 copy

This is the same image as above but I took most of the saturation out of it. I left a little bit of color to give the image a 'old' feel.

Pennlive.com: State releases $500,000 for Commerce Bank Park

According to Pennlive.com the state has released $500,000 to help rehabilitate Commerce Bank Park. The article continued by saying: "$500,000 for Commerce Bank Park rehabilitation, work to include the construction of a public plaza, comfort facilities, parking and pedestrian walkways."

No comments were made by the Senators front office regarding the funds.

Just my thoughts........
Personally I wouldn't expect many renovations/upgrades for the start of the 2009 season. Back in January 2008 I wrote an article Stadium Renovations. In it I stated "If State funding is required for the project I’m not expecting stadium renovations to begin until after the 2009 season at best." At this point I'm sticking to that statement. That statement was wrote before all the budget issues/recession really began. Funding is harder to come by today then it was 6-months ago as everyone is starting to feel the effects of the recession; states are no exception.

Harrisburg was without a baseball team for 35 years. We should enjoy the fact that there is a team for us to watch. The stadium could use some upgrades. But are they really NEEDED (maybe some are)?

I visited a Low-A affiliated stadium during the 2008 season that is in REALLY, REALLY bad shape and actually NEEDED completely renovated. When I mentioned it to other baseball fans they called that stadium "historic", "what a real minor league stadium is supposed to be like", "classic", "enjoyable place to watch a game", and the list goes on.... The facilities were in need of repair; it was almost a challenge to find a bathroom that worked. On the press side of things there was a steep climb to the press box which was on a spiral stair case and was slightly dangerous. Press had field access but they accepted the high risk of getting hit by a foul ball as there was no netting or protection offered (basically we were sitting on the field). Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the trip, would surely go there again, liked the staff and the fans were great but it made me appreciate what we have in Harrisburg at Commerce Bank Park.

I guess the point of my speech is that it's difficult for Senators fans to see money being thrown around to Lancaster, York, Altoona, various soccer stadiums and little or none being given to Harrisburg but we should enjoy what we have and be grateful we have a team to watch and support. There are stadiums far worse then ours.

Washington Post: Stearns Returning as Class AA Manager

John Stearns

According to the Washington Post: Stearns Returning as Class AA Manager

"The Harrisburg Senators, Washington's Class AA affiliate, will keep much of its coaching staff intact for 2009. John Stearns is returning as manager, Troy Gingrich is returning as the hitting coach, and Beth Jarrett will again serve as the trainer.

The one difference? Randy Tomlin replaces Rick Tomlin (no relation) as pitching coach. The younger Tomlin, 42, spent the previous two seasons in a similar role with Class A Potomac, where he worked with (to name a few) Ross Detwiler, Jordan Zimmermann and Zech Zinicola.

For both Gingrich and Stearns, 2009 will mark their second consecutive year with the Senators. But Stearns also managed the team in 2006, before taking a one-year detour to Class AAA Columbus and returning to H'Burg."

Looking Back at Sickles 2008 Nats Top 20

Each year, John Sickels releases his list of each MLB team Top 20 Prospects. On the eve of him releasing his 2009 list of the Nationals Top 20, I thought it would be a good idea to review his 2008 list to see how those players did.

They are in order by ranking and Sickels grade is listed after the players name. My comments follow Sickels pre-season grade.

Traded players are in Bold Italic

1. Chris Marrero (B+) Was injured most of the season and struggled when he did play batting .250 with 11 HR’s at Potomac.

2. Ross Detwiler, (B+) Struggled during 2008 going 8-8 with a 4.86 ERA at Potomac.

3. Michael Burgess,(B+) Split 08 between Hagerstown and Potomac where he combined to hit .246 with 24 HR’s, 79 RBI’s and 72 runs scored. He needs to cut down on strikeouts as he had 162 to only 55 walks.

4. Justin Maxwell, (B) was injured much of 08. He only appeared in 43 games, batting .233 with 7 homeruns.

5. Jordan Zimmerman, RHP, Grade B Split between Potomac and HBG, Nationals MiLB pitcher of the year.

6. Collin Balester (B-) Promoted to the Nationals in June.

7. Josh Smoker, (B-) Struggled at Hagerstown (0-4, 11.50 ERA) and then was demoted to GCL Nationals (rookie ball) where he did well going 2-1 1.37 ERA.

8. Adam Carr, (B-) struggled at Potomac and Harrisburg combined to go 6-8 with a 6.60 ERA.

9. John Lannan, (B-) Pitched for the Nationals going 9-15 with a 3.91 ERA in 31 games.

10. Glenn Gibson (C+) was traded to Tampa Bay for Dukes.

11. Colton Willems, (C+) appeared in 20 games for Hagerstown going 5-9 with a 3.70 ERA.

12. Ian Desmond, (C+) was injured for part of the 08 season. When he played he was streaky, showing good improvement at times but struggling at times too. He combined to hit .256 with 12 homeruns. He has continued the streaky performance in the AFL where he’s hitting .266 with 3 HR’s.

13. Jack McGeary, (C+) suited up for the GCL Nationals and Vermont (Class A Short Season). Overall his stats were not that bad (69 K’s/16 BB/.268 average against) but his record (2-2) and ERA (4.10) didn’t stand out.

14. Jake Smolinski, OF, Grade C+ Traded to the Marlins along with Emilio Bonifacio and P.J. Dean for Scott Olsen and Josh Willingham

15. Jon Albaladejo, RHP, Grade C+ traded to Yankees for Tyler Clippard in Dec 2007

16. Adrian Alaniz, (C+) was great at Potomac (9-0 with a 2.62 ERA) but didn’t manage to get a win after being promoted to Harrisburg, where he was 0-5 with a 3.93 ERA. Return to Harrisburg seems likely.

17. Shairon Martis, (C+) started 08 at Harrisburg and then was promoted to Colombus, he combined to 5-6 with a 3.64 ERA. Later was promoted to the Nationals where he was 1-3 with a 5.66 ERA. He will most likely return to Triple-A.

18. Jhonny Nunez, RHP, Grade C+ with the White Sox

19. Kory Casto, (C+), Let me start by saying I like Casto. He did well at Harrisburg and for the most part he played good in Triple-A but it doesn’t seem like he can make the transition to the MLB level. Seems to me like he is a 4-A player, good for Triple-A, but not good at the MLB level. He will be 27 going into the 2009 season. His days as a prospect are about done.

20. Josh Whitesell (C) picked up by the D-Backs and had a great season at Triple-A; made his MLB debut.

Memorabilia Monday 11/17: Vladimir Guerrero

This week’s Memorabilia Monday is probably the most well known of all the former Harrisburg Senators, Vladimir Guerrero.

Vladimir Guerrero was signed by the Montreal Expos as an amateur free agent in 1993. He made his City Island debut for the Harrisburg Senators in 1996. That season he batted .360 with 19 home runs, 84 runs scored and 78 RBI’s on the way to winning the Senators 1st of 4 consecutive EL Championships (96-99). He was an Eastern League All-Star, Rook of the Year, and MVP. He also earned the Double-A Player of the Year, Double-A All-Star, Baseball America’s 1st Team outfielder, and the Expos Minor League Player of the year.

Guerrero has excelled at the major league level for 13-seasons for the Montreal Expos (96-03) and the Anaheim/Los Angeles Angels since 2004. He is a career 323 hitter with 392 home runs. He is one of the most feared hitters in the game as indication by his 7 Silver Slugger Awards and leading the league in intentional walks 5 times. He’s appeared in 8 All-Star games and won the 2004 AL MVP award.

The Angels recently exercised their option on Guerrero for the 2009 season. He only needs 8 more home runs to become the first former Harrisburg Senators pass the 400 career home run mark.

Now about the piece of memorabilia, it’s a 1996 Best autographed Vladimir Guerrero card. I obtained this card from my good friend Jane Bratz. In 2007 she passed along a book full of her doubles to me; which I am very grateful for. I missed most of the games between 1995-2006 and she was gracious enough to share her extras with me, which contained many of the key players from the Championship years in the 90's.

Memorabilia Monday 11/10

Better late than never....

Back in the day the Senators brought two of baseballs most loved entertainers to City Island, SD Famous Chicken and Max "The Clown Prince" Patkin. I had the opportunity to see both perform and the did not disappoint. Afterwards I got both of their autographs. Patkin's auto was always a favorite of mine as he was the "original" that paved the way for others. The Famous Chicken still continues to perform. Max Patkin passed away 9 years ago this week and he is missed by baseball fans all over the world. The night before he passed away he was handing out his baseball card in the hospital. Even dealing with his own issues he still tried to make people smile.

Winter Leagues Coverage

Another tip-of-the-hat to my friend Jane for the assist for this article. She forwarded me the two following 2 links: MLB’s Complete Winter League Coverage and the Nationals Winter League Stats . Both are very valuable resources for keeping up to date with the Winter Leagues. I added the links to the right side toolbar and changed the title from AFL to Winter League Coverage. I also removed the individual player links since the are all located on the Nationals stats page.

Below is a list of players, that I compiled prior to Jane's e-mail, that are participating in the Winter Leagues and the teams they are on. Visit the following link for a complete list of Nationals Winter League participants. I also included a few 'former' Senators (but not a complete list).

New Photo Friday 11/7

This week’s new photo is from the August 10, 2008 game vs. Altoona. Between innings on the first base side there was a dance competition held where 3 people were selected to dance on the field and the fans picked a winner. Senators’ fan and 3rd base regular, Roy, won the competition for the second consecutive time.

I was sitting on the 3rd base side and had no idea there was dance competition going to happen. I was over there trying to get some decent images of Pirates prospect Jose Tabata. Also on the agenda that day were fellow Pirates right-handed prospects outfielder Jamie Romak, infielder Shelby Ford and starting pitcher Jared Hughes. Anyway, after Roy won the competition I figured he would look back towards the 3rd base side to see his friends cheering, that's when I took this image:

Election Day 2008

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I try not to get political on here as this is not the place for that type of discussion. Besides the candidates have done an ‘outstanding’ job of inundating us with debates, town hall meetings, commercials, infomercials, telephone calls and signs all over the place (I actually saw a lady walking down 2nd street in Harrisburg with a sign hung around her neck…).

I’m not going to back a certain candidate and I’m not going to preach about who you should or should not vote for; I just want to encourage everyone that wants to vote to exercise that right.

Unless a big announcement is made regarding the Harrisburg Senators or the Washington Nationals this will be the final post for today. Regular posting will resume tomorrow.

Exercise your right to vote!
