VanAllen Returns, Atilano to DL

From the Senators Press Release:
The Harrisburg Senators announced today that LHP Cory VanAllen has been activated from the disabled list and placed RH Luis Atilano on the disabled list with a blister on his right hand.

VanAllen had been on the DL with a sore back. He is 0-3 with a 6.33 ERA this season in six starts with the Senators. He was selected in the 5th round of the 2006 draft by the Nationals.

Atilano is the 1st round draft pick of the Braves before being dealt to the Nationals on 8/31/09 for Darryl Ward. Atilano is 3-3 with a 6.10 ERA in eight starts. The Senators have won the last five games he has started.

Also today, Luke Montz was optioned back to Harrisburg from Washington after being promoted to Washington yesterday. With these moves, the roster is now at 24 active and 4 on the DL.

A Few Game Photos....

It’s been a while since I posted any photos, so here are two from Sunday's game. This weekend I made it to 3 games (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). I still have to upload Saturday's photos and finish editing Sunday's photos. Not to mention that I would like to see Jesus Flores in this MLB Rehab stint with Harrisburg this week and I have a trip planned to Hagerstown on Wednesday.

Baseball photography, like life, is about being in the right place at the right time. This photo was taken from the first base ‘photog well/cubby’. For this photo I was in the right place to photograph Joel Guzman moving to his right in to shortstop territory to throw a runner out at first base.
Joel Guzman - Harrisburg Senators

This is a case of being on the wrong side of a play – I moved from the first base ‘cubby’ to the 3rd base ‘cubby’ anticipating a plate appearance by Baysox's prospect Brandon Snyder. I photographed Snyder's at bat but I also captured this….

Robert Valido, Bowie Baysox is safe at home. Harrisburg Senators catcher Luke Montz is air born trying to catch a high throw from right fielder Marvin Lowrance. Just image how good this photo could have been seeing Montz face in mid-air, mask flying, dirt dropping from his cleats and Valido’s face sliding home in a cloud of dust. Okay, it's not exactly a cloud of dust but you get the idea, it would have been much better.
Bowie's Robert Valido is safe at home

Shortly after each photo was taken both Guzman and Montz were removed from the game by manager John Stearns for displaying “suspicious effort”.

According to The Patriot News “Senators manager John Stearns yanked two veterans from the starting lineup for showing suspicious effort on the field and probably would have pulled even more if he had the resources to replace them. Guzman was axed after he managed just a single on a ball off the wall in the third inning, a hit that scored Ofilio Castro from first. And C Luke Montz was erased after casually throwing the ball back to RHP Zack Segovia as Baysox baserunners Daniel Figueroa and Dave Krynzel stole third and second base in the sixth.”

Flores Rehabs with Senators

The Harrisburg Senators have announced that C Jesus Flores has joined the team on an MLB rehab assignment. His assignment is expected to last until at least Thursday.

In addition RHP Carlos Martinez has been promoted from Potomac and RHP Andrew Kown has been transferred to the Senators from Syracuse.

LHP Yunior Novoa has been placed on the disabled list with a sore left elbow retroactive to May 21st.

With these moves, the Senators roster is at 24 active players plus four players on the disabled list and one MLB rehab.

FYI
Kown is 1-1 on the season with 3 saves and a 4.71 ERA in 13 games pitched between Potomac and Syracuse.

Martinez has pitched in 11 games this season for Potomac where he is 1-1 with a 4.21 ERA. He started 2 games this season for Potomac and is scheduled to start Tuesday’s game for the Senators. His ERA is considerable better as a starter (2.57) then as a reliever (4.82) this season.

Both Kown and Martinez pitched for the Senators last season.

News on Ross Detwiler****UPDATE

From the Senators press release:

Ross Detwiler was promoted to the Washington Nationals yesterday. He started the game last night for the Nats and went five innings, allowing three runs while striking out six. He left with a 5-3 lead but the Nats couldn't hold it in the loss.

It is unclear whether he will return to Harrisburg or go to Syracuse.

Currently the Senators roster stands at 23 active and 3 on the DL.

My guess is Detwiler goes to Syracuse and Harrisburg gets a starter in return.

Harrisburg currently has 4 active starters (Alaniz, Arnesen, Atilano and Jones) and 1 on the DL (VanAllen).

Best options from Potomac are Bradley Myers (3-0 with a 1.85 ERA) or Jeff Mandel (4-1 with a 2.25 ERA).

Struggling starters at Syracuse are Balester (1-5 with a 5.54 ERA) and O'Connor (1-4 with a 5.73 ERA). All other starters at Syracuse have pitched well.

Lots of options available....

*****UPDATE 5/20*****
It appears that Detwiler will stay with the Nats for at least one more start. He is scheduled to start for the Nats against Baltimore on Saturday. For more information vist the Senators News article

It’s been a long time….

To all of my family, friends, fans of the Senators and this site I turly hope you take a few minutes and read this entire article. I feel this is one of my very best articles. As I started writing this it just flowed out. When I finished it I skimmed through to check things out, and it sounded exactly the way I intended. This was the first and only draft; no edits at all. Enjoy!!

I did something last night that I haven’t done in a long time….I actually watched a baseball game.

I attend my fair share of games each season but my guess is that it’s been about 2 years since I actually sat down and watched a game. More times then not I’m viewing the game through a tiny viewfinder, which is connected to the lens of my camera. Sometimes when I leave the stadium I don’t know what the final score is, or who won (I know that sounds pretty sad). I’m usually so involved with who’s batting next inning, which side of the field I need to be on, which players I still need ‘shots’ of, deleting unusable shots between innings and making notes that I just don’t have time to enjoy the game.

Last night I was still acting in an ‘official capacity’ as I was photographing fans and various other non-player related activities. Unlike most games, when I sit in the cubby/photogwell adjacent to the dugout, last night I roamed the stands.

Another reason for my interest in watching the game last night was my son, Justin, was in attendance. Coincidentally, the last time he was at a Senators game was 2 years ago.

We weren’t even in the gate 5 minutes when a very kind man gave Justin a baseball (The guy must have caught a foul ball). My first stop was behind home plate to see my long time friends Bob and Jane. Jane gave my son a team photo and a couple autographs too (thank you). Rascal gave my son a Senators shirt during the ‘Slush Puppy t-shirt launch’. We hung around with Bob and Jane most of the first game talking and just watching the game.

With about an inning left in the first game we made our way to the first base side where we ran into Mark Butler, CEO of Ollie’s. I introduced Justin to Mr. Butler and we talked for a few minutes. Mr. Butler is one of the most genuinely nice people I’ve met.

On our way to the field last night Justin said “Daddy, I want to see Zech”. With that in mind we made our way down the first base line to the seats close to the bullpen. During Justin’s first visit to the island in 06, Senators closer, Zech Zinicola gave him a brand new baseball. For several weeks after that he insisted on taking the ball to bed with him (he would not sleep without it). After the first game was over and as Zech made his way in to the clubhouse we called him over. Zinicola talked with Justin for a few minutes and signed Justin’s Senators hat.

Then we made our way to the gate by the Senators dugout. Senators’ photographer, Steve Eddy, took time out of his hectic schedule of gathering photos for the 09 card set to talk with us.

When Steve left, a member of the Senators front office came over and asked Justin if he wanted to say “Play Ball!!!” to started the 2nd game. Next thing you know we’re on the field. As we were waiting for the Play Ball moment he became more fascinated with playing in the dirt then being on the field and around the players. When his time came, like a true champ, he yelled “Play Ball!!!” In my biased opinion, it was the best so far this season and will no doubt be the best all season.

We exited the field and made our way to the 3rd base side for some food. With a hot dog and fries in hand we found seats down the 3rd base line. We ate our food and enjoyed the first inning of the second game. When the inning was over we left.

When we arrived at home we watched “The Office” and “30 Rock”. As I put my son to bed I looked back on our evening and I realized the joy the game of baseball brought to us that night. I will always cherish the memories from that evening.

I also began to reflect on my job as a sports photographer. How I strive to be the best that I can and provide the highest quality photos possible. I started to realize the time, effort, and research I put into each game. My continued pursuit of taking my photography to the next level has become some what of an obsession. Basically, how serious my job as a photographer has become.

As I continued to reflect, I realized how serious the game of baseball has become; not only for me but for others around the game. How the game of baseball has become as politically motivated as state government; I’ve worked around politicians every day, all day long for 9 years so I am qualified to identify them.

First and foremost, baseball is a GAME. Yeah, I love photography. I love to see my photos on cards, websites and so on. In some ways it has become addicting to get my photos used more and more. Somewhere along the way, in the highly competitive, very demanding, and political charged game of baseball, I lost the true reason why I started to photograph baseball….because I love the game. Last night I got a little bit of that love for the game back.

Last night a learned a few things, so my goal for the remainder of the season is to still take the best photos possible, but to lose the seriousness and the political aspect and just enjoy the game. Most important, I need to take my son to the field more often.

Weekend Roster Moves and My Thougts....

Analysis of this weekends roster moves.

Incoming: C Luke Montz, LHP Dave Williams and 3B Joel Guzman.

Outgoing: Jemel Spearman (disabled list), Adam Carr (extended spring training) and Javi Herrera (Vermont).

The additions
#1 question for most people is why is Luke Montz, who is on the 40-man roster, back in Harrisburg? It’s strickley a numbers game, to many catchers in AAA and the Nats wanted Montz to catch everyday.

This move will effect the playing time of Jonathan Solano, who through 11 games played is hitting .302.

Dave Williams is a journey man who has played in the following organizations, Pirates(98-05), Mets(2006), Reds(2006), Mets(2007) and now the Nationals. Williams served mostly as a starter in his 82 games in the majors combining for 22-31 record and a 4.83 ERA.

3B Joel Guzman is an interesting addition as he was a big prospect in the Dodgers and Rays organizations. He seems like he’s been around forever but is only 24 year old. Was once considered a power prospect but has never really hit for much power, best HR year was 23 in 2004. He has a minor league career average of .264 over 7 seasons. He has appeared in 24 major league games. Guzman got off to a good start in Harrisburg going 3/5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s.

Say Good-Bye

I don’t know the extent of Jemel Spearman’s injury but he is currently on the 7-Day DL. He became expendable with the additions of Bynum and Guzman. The Senators were playing Leonard Davis at 3rd and they needed Spearman utility experience to fill-in in the outfield and infield.

Adam Carr’s move to extended spring training is not a real surprise. He has struggled in 8 appearances with the Senators allowing 16 hits, 10 runs in 10.1 Innings pitched. EL batters have a combined .372 average against him. Carr ERA has inflated to 8.71. This move will allow him to work on his mechanics. He will be able to iron out the issues and hopefully return soon.

Javi Herrera is another numbers game. With Solano playing well and the addition of Montz, there is no need to carry a 3rd cather. Montz will see most of the playing time with Solano filling in as needed. Herrera was officially moved to Vermont’s roster but was still here as of Saturday’s game.

My Thoughts
With the additions of Guzman, Williams and Montz gives the Senators a veteran presence. All three have played in the majors.

Starting line up could look like this:
C: Montz
1B: Rhinehart (has been hitting well lately).
2B: Mix between Ofilio Castro and Michael Martinez
SS: Freddy Bynum
3B: Joel Guzman (at times Castro)
OF: Edgardo Baez
OF: Mike Daniel
OF: Leonard Davis

The moves over the past week seem to make sense. It allows Davis to concentrate on the outfield, gives the Senators a true shortstop in Bynum (who made a great play on the second base side of the bag on Saturday) and gives the Senators a valuable option at middle reliever. I’ve followed Guzman since his days with the Dodgers and would really like to see him put things together in Harrisburg.

Ofilio Castro is now going to float between 2nd and 3rd. His best position is 3rd but I’m sure he’ll take playing time where ever he can get it. With inconsistent playing time it’s possible that his performance will continue to suffer.

Be prepared for more moves. I have a feeling that this roster isn’t set yet.
