Harrisburg Senators second baseman Ofilio Castro has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week. Castro batted .786 (11 for 14) during the week ending June 14th. Castro had seven RBIs during the week and four runs scored to lead the Senators to a 4-2 record for the week with all four wins on the road. At the plate Castro hit a home run, a double and walked three times. In the five games Castro played in during the week he reached base in each game and achieved a 1.071 slugging percentage.
On Thursday afternoon Castro went 4 for 5 and led the Senators to a rain shortened win over the Binghamton Mets on the road at NYSEG Stadium. Castro led the Eastern League in batting average, hits, on base percentage and slugging percentage for the week.
So far in the month of June Castro has hit .424 in 11 games with one home run, 10 RBI and six runs scored.
Castro, a Nicaragua native, was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Montreal Expos in 2000 and has remained with the organization his entire career. Castro has played the entire 2009 season in Harrisburg after having finished the 2008 season with the club. In 2007 Castro was named the Carolina League Mid-Season All Star while with Potomac.
Ofilio Castro becomes the first Senators position player to win the Player of the Week Award in the 2009 season.
