Who are the 09 Senators?

There is a lot of buzz around the Harrisburg Senators going in to the 2009 season. The upgrades to the stadium and the rejuvenated promotional schedule have generated a lot of that buzz. One of the remaining questions is; who will be assigned to Harrisburg? With only a month left until opening night I give to you my best guess at who I think could start the 09 season as a Senator.

I've been messing with this list since January so I'm hoping this is a little better than last years, as I only got 8 right. Roster Limits according to MiLB.com are, 24 from Opening Day through the 30th day of the season and from August 10 to the end of the season; 23 from 31st day of season until Aug. 10. I have a total of 24 players (2 catchers, 6 infielders, 5 outfielders and 11 pitchers).

Starters
C - Jhonathan Solano
1B - Bill Rhinehart
2B - Michael Michael
3B - Ofilio Castro
SS - Ian Desmond
LF - Marvin Lowrance
CF - Mike Daniel
RF - Justin Maxwell / Edgardo Baez

Starting Pitchers
RHP Adrian Alaniz
RHP Luis Atilano
RHP Hassan Pena
LHP Justin Jones
LHP Cory VanAllen

Bench
CA Devin Ivany
IF Marco Yepez
IF Matt Rogelstad
OF Dee Brown
OF Matt Whitney

Relief Pitchers
RHP Arnesen, Erik
RHP Wilkie, Josh
LHP Severino, Atahualpa
LHP Spradlin, Jack
RHP Alex Morales
RHP Adam Carr

Players I had on my list of "possibles" were OF/1B Andrew LeFave, pitcher Jeff Mandel and pitcher Kyle Gunderson. LeFave's versatility could serve the Senators well as he could cover both 1B and outfield but his bat never really got going last year, so in my opinion he could use a little more time at Potomac. Mandel put up decent numbers last year and could take Morales, Spardlin or Arnesen's spot. Due to the numbers game I figured Mandel will start at Potomac. Gunderson pitched well but didn't get many innings at Potomac. He will probably be in Harrisburg by the All-Star break.

I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Marrero, Ross Detwiler and Clint Everts all make an appearances in Harrisburg before June (maybe sooner).

I was going to guess about possible appearances after the All-Star break but it seems a little early for that.

Maxwell/Baez means that probably one of them will start the season in Triple-A.
Ian Desmond and Justin Maxwell both missed a large chunk of last season with injuries. Even though they both played in the winter leagues, I think they could benefit from a brief stint in Harrisburg.

Disclaimer: This is my best guess at who might be assigned to Harrisburg to start the season. Actual rosters will be released somewhere between April 3 and April 6th. I will post the actual roster as soon as it becomes available.

If this "guesttimate holds out", 18 Senators who played for the Senators in 2008 will return. Eighteen out of 24 seems like an optimistic number.

Castro, Lowrence, Daniel, Morales and Carr deserve a shot at AAA.

Jane,

I have to agree that those players you named all deserve a shot at AAA but it all really came down to numbers. There were to many people "stuck" in Triple-A. Carr struggled last year. Daniel had a great first half and then was very average the second half. After floating around various teams Morales ended the season at Potomac. In my opinion, Castro's play should earn him a spot at Triple-A but he would probably be coming off the bench.

I am probably off but I think it's more likely that we see a majority of the team has logged time with the Senators in the past.

Will - Usually, one-third of the team gets promoted to AAA, one-third come back to AA, and one-third are "lost" to other organizations or levels in the same organization.

Thanks for the feedback. I will continue to monitor the cuts and so on, adjusting my roster as needed.
