Interview with Terry Byrom

Back in January 2008 I conducted my first ever interview; it was with Terry Byrom, Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations for the Harrisburg Senators. With all the changes in the Senators over the past year I thought it would be a good idea to sit down with Terry again to get his take on how the Senators have evolved since our last interview.

Senators Fans Unite: How are things going this ‘off-season’?

Terry Byrom: Will, things are going great this off-season. We are hearing a lot of excitement about the renovations. I can’t tell you how much fun it is to come to the ballpark and see all the construction equipment and know that things are finally happening.

SFU: You and Dan Watson seemed to have good on-air chemistry last season. With Dan moving on to be the radio voice of the Fort Wayne TinCaps, do the Senators intend to find someone to help you call games this year or will you be the lone voice of the Senators?

TB: I will definitely miss Dan on and off the air. He was ahead of his age on the air and with his knowledge of the game of baseball. I fully expect to get free tickets from Dan when he’s working for whatever big league he’s going to get a job with because I have no doubt that he’ll reach the big leagues.

At this point the plan is for me to be solo this year. We’ll see if that changes as we get closer to the season. I might have a couple of surprise guests this year, but nothing permanent.

SFU: 2008 was a tail of two halves. The Senators got off to a fast start and did pretty well until the All-Star break. After the break they were competitive at times but fell behind in the standings and missed the playoffs. What are your thoughts on why there was such a decline in the second half?

TB: All teams have good stretches during the season and bad stretches. It’s very noticeable early in the season and it’s easy to notice late in the season. The Senators last year just had too many players promoted too quickly and by the time the “new” team gelled towards the end of August it was too late to make a run at the playoffs. But what a season it was on the field. Fans were really treated to a whole lot of future major league players last year which is what makes following AA minor league baseball so much fun.

SFU: What are your thoughts on the Nationals prospects that came through Harrisburg in 2008 (Daniel, Desmond, Bernadina, Maxwell, Leonard Davis, Zimmermann, Martis, Zinicola and VanAllen)?

TB: That looks like a pretty good list of players to me. For the Nationals to get turned around, that type of list of players needs to come through here every year. Jordan Zimmermann is going to be a player that is fun to follow in the big leagues. I think he’s still just learning to pitch and last year gained confidence with every start he made. I’m still a big fan of Roger Bernadina and think that Roger can still become an everyday player in the big leagues. Justin Maxwell just needs to have a full season where he can be injury free so that we can see what he can do which is going to be a lot!

SFU: It’s kind of early to predict but if you could guess, what do you think the 2009 Senators starting line-up will look like (including starting-5 pitchers)?

TB: Wow. This is a tough one. I really don’t have a good idea about who is going to be here because we don’t know how many more minor league free agents the Nats are going to sign. The other thing to keep in mind that repeating AA for even three seasons doesn’t mean that a player can’t get to the big leagues and contribute. I would imagine we are going to see a fair amount of players here to start the season that were here last season. And it wouldn’t surprise me to see players start here that were promoted to Columbus last year.

SFU: The Nationals have been drafting and signing young talent aggressively over the past few years. Out of all the draft picks and signings who are some of the prospects you’re most looking forward to seeing on City Island?

TB: I’m looking forward to seeing Chris Marrero, Michael Burgess, and Ross Detwiler. I’m also looking forward to seeing Bill Rhinehart and Edgardo Baez get fresh starts here.

SFU: Senator’s fans were promised renovations for many years, now that it’s finally taking place what are some of your favorite features in the new stadium?

TB: For this season, I’m really looking forward seeing people on the boardwalk during the games and really feeling like the field is “surrounded.” I think it’s going to be a lot fun watching home runs go out on the boardwalk. I’m also really excited about all of the video board space we are going to have, over 2400 square feet to really give the fans entertainment we’ve never been able to give before. And lastly, for this season, I’m really looking forward to the seats above the fence down the left field line. I love seeing home runs go into the seats in Altoona, and I think it will be just as exciting here at Commerce Bank Park.

SFU: In the new stadium what are some of the ‘behind the scenes” features that will assist in making you job a little easier?

TB: I’m not sure about this year, but there are plenty for next year. Having all of the press/media information in the press box will be a huge help to me and will be nice for the media to have to go to just one place. Having a better press setup will certainly make doing my job easier. All of our jobs next year will be easier because of how exciting everything will be with the new ballpark.

SFU: Thanks for taking time to answer some questions. Do you have any parting comments for Senators fans?

TB: I can’t wait for the season to start. I think it’s going to be so exciting to see the fans come out to the ballpark this year and see the looks on their faces as they look at the new video board and the boardwalk. I also want to thank the fans for making me feel so welcome over the past four years, they’ve all been very kind to me. And Will, thanks for providing the fans with all of the photo’s and information through this terrific website.

I want to thank Terry for taking time out to answer a few questions. Good luck this season.

Watson Moves On

Some of you may already know this but Dan Watson, Terry Byrom’s on-air sidekick, has moved on to become the new radio broadcaster for the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Class A affiliate of the Padres). Senators fans can keep up with Watson by reading his blog The Watson Files.

Watson took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for me.

SFU: How are things going out in Fort Wayne?

Dan Watson: Things are going extremely well. We’re getting ready to open a brand-new $31-million facility in downtown Fort Wayne this April, so a lot of my off-season work is designed to spread the excitement of what’s going on. For example, today I spoke at a Rotary club meeting and everyone seemed to be excited about what we’re doing. Our staff is fantastic; they’re experienced, yet still welcoming to me and the other new people and they’re hungry to succeed. We got drilled with six inches of snow yesterday, but it’s still fun to think about baseball and all the great things the new park will do for downtown Fort Wayne.

SFU:Senators fans are sad to see you go. What were some of your reasons for signing on with the TinCaps vs. staying in Harrisburg?

DW: I was certainly sad to leave the people I met in Harrisburg as well. They were always very nice to me and I hope they know how much I appreciated that. A few things made Fort Wayne attractive to me. The main thing that brought me here was the new ballpark. Being from the Cleveland area, I’ve seen what the Gateway project did for the downtown area with the Quicken Loans Arena and Progressive Field. It turned that area from one of the worst parts of town to a legitimate travel destination. I feel like we have the opportunity to do something similar here in Fort Wayne. Also, my career goal is to get to the major leagues. It may seem like a step back to go from Double-A to Single-A, but with the TinCaps I’m the lead broadcaster, whereas I was the broadcast assistant in Harrisburg. I think calling all 140 games will help me develop even more as a broadcaster and give me some added credibility for future jobs down the road.

SFU: You and Terry Byrom seemed to work well together calling games for the Senators last season. Were there any tips or advice he offered to you that will reflect in the way you call games for the TinCaps?

DW: The thing I liked most about working with Terry is that he let me be myself on the air. There isn’t any specific advice I remember (unless you count his on-air tips on how to meet women), but he was good at was critiquing the little things. If there was something he noticed, he would let me know and I would try to fix it. I’m sure I’ll bother him during the season and have him listen to some of my stuff to make sure I’m doing OK. There are always ways to improve on the air; that’s for sure.

SFU: Do you have any comments for Senators fans?

DW: I would just reiterate my thanks for how well everyone treated me while I was there. I was glad to hear the renovations are in the works on City Island, so the fans who stuck it out are finally getting what they deserve. I hope you enjoy the improvements! Maybe if the Senators make the playoffs I’ll make a trip back to check everything out!

I want to thank Dan for taking time out to answer a few questions for me. Good luck in Fort Wayne, I'm sure you'll do well.

Change in Layout

PLEASE READ ENTIRE POST....

Over the next few weeks I will be editing the layout of this blog to hopefully make it a little more user friendly.

First thing I added was the ability to have readers click "Read More..." to read the entire post. For each post you will see a brief 'teaser' about the article and then you can click "Read More..." to finish reading the article (click the "Read More..." link below).

I hope this will help my readers find the content they are looking for faster and help cut down on the length of each post. It's a little more work on my end but it will help keep things cleaner looking.

I might end up changing the photo at the top of this site and a few other things in the coming weeks. I will keep you updated of any changes as they happen.

I would appreciate any feedback on the changes.

Phase 1 Demolition Photos

My son and I made the trip to City Island this weekend to check out what demolition was done so far to Commerce Bank Park.

It felt bitter cold on the island with temps around 30 but with the wind whipping off the semi-frozen Susquehanna River it felt much colder. There were snow showers off and on all morning. My 4-year-old son was a real trooper as he made it through the visit only complaining when the wind really picked up. We managed to find shelter during those times which helped keep us a little warmer then taking the full brunt of the wind.

Needless to say the Senators offices were closed and my “access” was limited to the street which is behind the yellow caution tape.

Anyway, I tried to get the best photos possible with all things considered.

I started another Flicker page (Senators Renovations). It will contain all things relating to the Senators renovation. I posted photos of how the outfield looked prior to demolition (photos taken 4/1/2008) and the new stadium designs that were released last month. It will also include all the images taken during the renovation process. I’m also going to add it as a slide show on the right side toolbar.

Enjoy…

Demolition!!!

For those following the construction process, I received a media advisory that Phase 1 of the renovation has begun. As per the advisory, the “existing ticket booths, outfield fence, billboards, etc. is planned to go on throughout this week”. “If this week goes to schedule, the current outfield fence and billboards will be completely demolished.”

I’ve reached out to the Senators and expressed interest in taking photos of the demolition process. Hopefully I’ll be able to share the images with you at some point early next week (if all goes well).

Weekend Promo Schedule
A weekend promo schedule was released the other day. This will include Giveaways every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and Fireworks every Friday home game throughout the season. In addition, on weekends, the gates will open 90 minutes early so fans have a chance to check out the new boardwalk and outfield seating as well as the other upgrades.

Reviewing the New Stadium Part 2

Part 2 is going to cover the issues that were either brought to my attention or I noticed. Again, Senators GM Randy Whitaker was kind enough to answer questions to help clairfiy some of the concerns that have been raised.

Let me start by saying there are very few issues I have with the new stadium and those issues are just me being picky. I’ll counter that by saying that these are just artist renditions of what the stadium is supposed to look like when it’s finished in 2010 and everything is not readily visible in the designs. Plus, as noted in part one, the designs are still in process and there may be changes. Thus my analysis is based solely on talking with fans, looking at the designs and talking with Randy Whitaker.

I’m sure there was a lot of planning behind the scenes anticipating the awarding of state funds to back the project but logistically I think the 4-month time frame to complete everything scheduled in Phase 1 is extremely aggressive. Back in June I had a complete tour of the Reading Phillies facilities, it was mentioned during the tour that the small ‘pool’ located in right field(view Reading seating chart to see area I'm talking about) took all off-season to complete (8 months). The Senators are hoping to have phase 1 which includes the public plaza, a boardwalk surrounding the entire outfield, completely upgraded scoreboard, new outfield seating (left and right fields), new outfield wall with static advertisement panels and start building an 8,600 sq foot Operations building in only 4 months. I’m hoping for the best but being realistic it seems like a difficult task. I asked Randy about the time constraints and how confident he was that everything would be ready for opening day 2009. Whitaker replied “I’m very confident that the video system will be up and operational. They tell me the boardwalk will be ready, but even if it is not, it will only cause a temporary inconvenience by changing the location of the entry gate until the entryway is completed. I’m sure they’ll do their best to make it as functional as possible as soon as possible.”

A concern raised by family, friends and other Senators fans I talked with over the holidays, and brought up on Pennlive.com forum as well as a few e-mails I received is; has construction begun yet? Randy says “the changes to the drainage system in the outfield are almost complete. The rest of the work should begin the end of the month. This is all tied to the bid process and the City. Remember, this is a City of Harrisburg project, not a Senators project. We just get to share the benefits with the fans.”

Harrisburg Senators New Stadium 3

Autographs of the visiting team might be an issue once phase 2 is complete. The way I see it there might only be one location for getting visiting team autographs before the game and that is the small section of seats located closest to the their dugout (see above image). As of right now, down the 3rd base line, there will be visiting team dugout, a photog well/grounds crew area, dugout suites seating, followed by the visiting teams bull pen. I asked Randy, do you think this set up will limit fans access for autographs of the visiting team before the game? His response was “Under the current design, it certainly looks that way. I can’t really render any suggestions on alternative positions yet, but will look when the design is settled. I believe the locker room entrance will be unchanged making it the best alternative for access to the visitors.

Another issue that came up in conversation with someone is the mayfly problem. Initially my response was ‘I doubt there is a whole lot they could do to stop the mayfly’s’. Randy was quick to reply “Absolutely! That’s one of the best features of the new park. There will be a lot of roofing/screening over a majority of the seats. It won’t keep all the bugs out, but it will certainly help. We can’t get rid of them, but we can try to manage and reduce the numbers in seating areas.”

One thing that is always on the back of peoples minds when building close to water is flooding. In years past flooding was an issue on City Island and in particular, Commerce Bank Park. Randy told me “Flood protection is a major factor in the design I’m told – an expensive factor. You can’t change the route as the water comes up from behind rather than flows across. So the trick is making everything below the 100-year flood plain mobile. That means that anything below 14 feet above field level is on wheels, or is water proof. At least that is what they tell me.” In regards to flooding concerns damaging the new static advertisement panels Whitaker told me it’s “always a consideration when the water gets REAL high – but as long as it doesn’t go above the first tier of banners (8 feet above field level) I think we’ll be fine.”

Finally I asked Randy, what are the changes/additions he is most looking forward to in 2009? Also in 2010 when the renovation is complete? He replied “Video – video – video! The show is going to be greatly upgraded in 2009. In 2010 just having everyone in their own seat with arms will be great.”

I don’t know about you but I am ready for the baseball season to start. When the renovations are complete they might have to open the gates 2-3 hours early so the fans have a chance to take part in all the extra activities and still have time to enjoy the game.

Be sure to share your comments, thoughts or questions.

Reviewing the New Stadium Part 1

Over the past several years Senators fans have heard the promises of a new stadium and each time it never happened. Now under new ownership and management, combined with funding from the state and the City of Harrisburg it seems as though it is Finally Harrisburg’s Turn to receive a much needed upgrade!!! As my earlier post noted the renovations will be a two-part process. Phase 1 is scheduled to be finished before the 2009 season. Phase 2 will begin after the 2009 season and is scheduled for completion for the 2010 season. Throughout this article Harrisburg Senators GM, Randy Whitaker was kind enough to offer some comments regarding the new stadium project.

Before I get started I want to make clear that the designs are still in process and there may be changes. Changes might take place during construction that could possibly eliminate various features. If changes are made during construction and they are brought to my attention I will pass them along to you. For purposes of this article I will be using the information contained in the press release and the 7 design images to evaluate the new stadium.

Harrisburg Senators New Stadium 3

One of the features I like most in the new stadium are the dugout suites located on the 3rd base side (pictured above). I always liked sitting in the red reserve seating on the 1st or 3rd base sides in the current stadium. Those seats are almost at field level and for a photographer it offers a decent perspective and many angles to ‘shoot’ from, assuming you are allowed to move around. The dugout seating in the new stadium is as close to sitting in the team dugouts as a fan can get. Once I moved to credentialed media and was allowed to shoot from the ‘photog well’ adjacent to the team dugout it offered a completely different perspective and feel to watching a game. This is a really nice feature that I think any diehard-fan who wants to feel like they’re “in the game” should take advantage. GM Randy Whitaker noted that “the dugout suites are just mini-suites on field level. Not luxury – bring your own concessions. Just a cool field level perspective like the players have.” Both Randy and I aren’t aware of any other minor league stadiums with the dugout suites configuration like the one purposed in Harrisburg but he noted that he’s “been to Lehigh, and they have dugout level seating behind home plate.”

Harrisburg Senators New Stadium 5

Another feature of interest is the batting cages (pictured above between the plaza entrance and the office building). During my initial review of the new designs I noticed the batting cages near the entrance. I asked Randy if they would be available to fans or players and he said “The batting cages under the offices will be both. The two on the east end will be for the teams. The rest will be public (assuming we can work out an arrangement with the batting cage guy by the bridge).” Randy also noted that “the batting cages won’t be operational under the offices until the 2010 season.”

Harrisburg Senators New Stadium

Outfield seating is something Harrisburg has lacked in past years. This issue will be resolved with the addition of a boardwalk and outfield seating, which is scheduled for completion in April 2009 as part of phase 1 (pictured above). This is a good idea. I was in Reading, which has an outfield boardwalk (kind of), and the thought of being able to walk completely around the park without leaving the stadium is nice. An added bonus is being able to sit on the boardwalk, enjoy the game with your favorite beverage and have the opportunity to go home with a souvenir homerun ball.

Video Board

Over the past few season the scoreboard has been a topic of discussion among faithful Senators fans. Complaints ranged from inaccurate stats, stats not updated during the game and bulbs being out and, parts of the board not functioning. Personally I only use the scoreboard to see what inning it is and what the score is; on occasion I will look to see who is at bat. The new scoreboard (pictured above) will be a welcomed upgrade. It will function properly at some point but the accurate stats will be up to the people ‘controlling the boards’.

LF Led Board

Another feature that goes along with the scoreboard, in a way, is the new outfield wall with static advertisement panels (pictured above). In a two-part question I asked Randy, Once all phases are complete (in 2010), will the in-game entertainment be solely driven by the static panels and the scoreboard? Or will there still be fans/staff on-field during games? "There will still be some on-field entertainment. We’ll also have the added “stages” of the dugout tops that we have never been able to use under the current design." This is something that I saw work effectively at Frederick last year. It keeps the game moving and allows fewer opportunities for the staff/fans to delay the game.

A family oriented feature slated for completion during Phase 2 is the creation of the “Midway” which will include activities and specialty areas. I’m sure this will be a welcomed addition to parents with small children. It will also provide families and teens a place to find additional entertainment during the game. I asked Randy if the “Midway’ entertainment would be something like what is offered in Frederick; where they have amusement park type entertainment and play area? Or what types of entertainment are planned for the “Midway? He said that its “Still under development, but I’d think more along the line of Reading/Altoona/State College with their carnival style games.”

Note: Part 2 will be posted tomorrow. Be sure to leave feed back with your thoughts and comments regarding the new stadium.

LED Board and Video Board Additions

Press Release From the Harrisburg Senators

State-of-the-Art Additions for 2009 at Commerce Bank Park

Harrisburg, PA – On Friday, December 19th the City of Harrisburg and the Harrisburg Senators announced a two-phase major renovation to Commerce Bank Park to begin immediately. This major renovation will modernize Commerce Bank Park. The first step in phase one is the installation of a new state-of-the-art video board and two LED ribbon boards.

The new 19mm LED video board is 21’ high x 56’ wide and will be placed in the same location as the old matrix boards in right field. This will be the largest video board in the minor leagues in Pennsylvania and the second largest video board in all of minor league baseball.

Along with the new video board in right field, there are going to be two new LED ribbon boards installed in left field and right center field. The total size of these two LED boards is 6’6” high x 200’ wide. The board in left field is 125’ wide and the one in right center field is 75’ wide. These are also 19mm LED boards.

“With these exciting additions, the Senators will have over 2400 square feet of 19mm video boards,” according to the Senators president Kevin Kulp. “What this means to our fans is that we’ll be able to entertain them on a nightly basis in a way that has never been done here before.”

In addition to the new video board elements, there is also going to be a new LED scoreboard. The new scoreboard will include all the typical features such as balls, strikes, outs, runs, hits, errors, inning score, and team names. It will also include time and temperature and a pitch speed reading as well.

“Our new video displays will allow us to utilize interactive game elements that have not ever been seen here at Commerce Bank Park,” per the new Director of Game Entertainment Aaron Margolis. “I think our fans will love the interactive content on the video board, not just during the game but also our between inning video board races, hat shuffles, and other new promotions. With cameramen roving the stands, fans will see themselves on our large video screen and will be encouraged to join in during on-screen dance-offs, kiss cams, and much more. Our new displays will allow us to make our fans the stars of the show.”

The exciting 2009 season opens on the road at Reading on April 9th with the home opener set for Thursday, April 16th at 7:00pm. Season tickets and group tickets are available by either phoning the Senators at 717-231-4444 or by going online to www.senatorsbaseball.com. Happy New Year!!!!

Sorry for the lack of updates during the month of December. It was a crazy month. As you might remember my computer had issues, then I was sick most of the month with a sinus infection (possibly a cold and a touch of the flu) and trying to deal with the loss of my brother and not having him around on the holidays (not an easy task).

My 20-month old daughter, Maddie, has suffered from an ear infection since November. Late last week she had a severe allergic reaction to an antibiotic (hives, swelling, sleepless, etc…). Needless to say she might be getting tubes in her ears at some point.

Santa was very, very kind to my kids as he delivered several items on their wish list. Aside from my daughter and I being sick, we tried our best to enjoy the holidays with family and friends; “enjoy what we have”.

2009 is upon us and it should be an exciting year for Senators fans. Phase 1 of the renovation process is scheduled to be completed by opening day 2009. There are many things I am looking forward to in the new stadium; more on that in an article scheduled for later this week. Hopefully the Senators can continue to build upon the success from last year (their first winning season in forever) and make it to the playoffs. Although that might delay Phase 2 of the renovation, which is scheduled to begin after the 09 season, I think Senators fans and management are willing to deal with a delay to see a championship back in Harrisburg!!!!

What’s in store for 2009 here at SFU? You will have to check back and see. Last year I was a little more carefree with my ideas and posted them on here and many of them were “borrowed” (I’m trying to be kind) before I got to post them. Other sites/media outlets have countless paid (or unpaid) employees, valuable resources, and endless amounts of time to devote to implementing ideas and preparing articles. Here it’s just me doing all the writing, photography, trying to be creative and researching (with an occasional assist from my good friend Jane Bratz, which I greatly appreciate). Not complaining, just venting. I enjoy this site, and I hope you do as well, but it was frustrating to see the lack of creativity by others. Well, that is enough on that topic.

2009 should be a fun year both here at SFU and at the stadium. I hope to see many of you on the island this year.

Will

I added all 7 images of the New Stadium design to my slide show/Flickr page.
